Machu Picchu was constructed with a technique called ashlar which involves stones being perfectly shaped so that a mortar is not needed. The stones are fitted so well that not even a knife blade will fit between them. Built over 2 fault lines, the building stones 'dance' during earthquakes and then fall back in place.
